What we work on

The skills that take a surfer to the next level.

Every surfer is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all lesson plan. We focus on the five areas that separate a surfer who rides waves from a surfer who rips them.

  • Speed generation

Pumping, rail work and reading the wave's energy to keep speed down the line.

  • Turn progression

From solid bottom turns to committed top turns, cutbacks and carves.

  • Wave selection

Learning which waves to go for, and which to let pass, so every ride counts.

  • Positioning

Where to sit in the lineup and how to be in the right spot when the set arrives.

  • Contest strategy

Heat tactics, priority and smart wave counts for groms who want to compete.

Inside a one-on-one session

From the sand to the screen.

Every one-on-one session follows the same flow: set a goal, coach it in the water, capture it on film, then break it down so your child can see exactly what to work on next.

  1. 01On the sand

    Set the goal

A talk about what your child wants to work on, plus the form and fundamentals that will help them get there.

  2. 02In the water

    In-water coaching

Ryan paddles out alongside your child for real-time feedback, wave by wave.

  3. 03From the beach

    Filming

Ryan heads to the beach and films your child putting the coaching into practice.

  4. 04Follow-up

    Footage breakdown

Ryan reviews the clips and breaks down what to work on, then follows up at the next session or in between. You'll get a link to view and download the clips.

Why we film

“Being able to watch yourself surf is an absolute necessity if you want to improve.”
Ryan Fegley, coach
  • Every one-on-one session is filmed from the beach

Ryan Fegley, founder and coach of PB Surf Progression

Meet your coach

Hey, I'm Ryan. Stoked you found me!

I was born and raised in San Diego and have surfed Pacific Beach and Mission Beach my whole life. Growing up surfing and spending time in the ocean made a huge positive impact on me, and I want to help pass that lifestyle on.

At 18, I was sponsored by a surfboard company and surfed in contests regularly. I have a great understanding of the core fundamentals of the sport, and I'd be stoked to share that knowledge with your child.

See you in the water!

The philosophy

Surfing is meant to be fun.

Ryan started PB Surf Progression to offer what he couldn't find growing up: fun, affordable coaching. So much of what he learned came from trial and error that the right guidance would have made easier. The goal is to hold a space where your child can enjoy themselves and take their surfing to the next level. Real progression shows up over months, so a longer-term relationship of six months or more is where kids see the biggest results.

FAQ

Good questions, straight answers.

Is my child the right level for this?

PB Surf Progression is built for intermediate surfers ages 12 to 16: kids who can already paddle out and ride waves on their own, and want to progress. If you're not sure, text Ryan a little about your child's surfing and he'll let you know.

What does my child need to bring?

Their own board and gear. Surfing on their own equipment means everything they learn carries straight over to every surf after the session.

Where do sessions take place?

Coaching is done in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach in San Diego, the breaks Ryan has surfed his whole life.

How do we get the footage?

After the session, Ryan sends you a link to the footage through an online service like Dropbox, so you can watch it and download the clips to keep. Your child can rewatch, share and keep learning from them.

Which option should we choose?

Ryan recommends the 4-session pack. Real progression shows up over a longer period of time, and four sessions let each one build on the last. For the biggest results, a longer-term relationship of six months or more is ideal.

How does a group lesson work?

Group lessons are for up to two surfers, so your child and a friend. It's straight in-water coaching, without the filming and footage breakdown, and a great way to push each other and have even more fun. $130 per session.

What if we need to reschedule?

Sessions go ahead as scheduled. If you'd like to move one, just let Ryan know at least 24 hours in advance.

How do we book?

Call or text Ryan at 619-770-9489. Share your child's age, how long they've been surfing and what they'd like to work on, and he'll get you scheduled. Payment can be made by Zelle, cash or check.
